Professor Jason Ralph is a leading academic in International Relations at the University of Leeds, specializing in International Society, Global Governance and the UN, Responsibility to Protect, Foreign Policy, and Pragmatic Constructivist IR theory. He previously served as Head of the School of Politics and International Studies and is an Honorary Professor of International Relations at the University of Queensland.

His research agenda integrates philosophical Pragmatism into International Relations theory to assess international practices and norms. He critically examines the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) norm cluster, ontological security frameworks, and the adaptation of international practices to global challenges like climate insecurity and health crises. His work advocates for a pragmatic constructivist normative test to evaluate the appropriateness of international practices.
Recent contributions include the 2023 monograph On Global Learning (CUP), which addresses the interaction between norms, practices, and global governance, and influential articles in International Organization and Global Studies Quarterly (forthcoming 2024) that reframe R2P through ethical pragmatism. His research has been funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, British Academy, Research Councils UK, and the European Union’s Marie Curie Fellowship (2014-2016), for which his work was nominated for a Marie Curie Prize in societal contribution.

As a founding director of the European Centre for the Responsibility to Protect, he leads collaborative efforts on normative international security research.
