Jason R. Spence is the H. Marvin Pollard Collegiate Professor at the University of Michigan, holding appointments in the Departments of Internal Medicine, Cell and Developmental Biology, and Biomedical Engineering. His research focuses on understanding organ and tissue formation using human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) to generate complex 3D organoids. Key areas include intestinal and lung development, regenerative medicine, and disease modeling. The Spence Lab, established in 2011, is located in the Biomedical Sciences Research Building (BSRB) and emphasizes translational research through platforms like the Translational Tissue Modeling Laboratory (TTML).
Research interests span organoid engineering, stem cell differentiation, and the application of organoids in studying congenital diseases, cancer, and infection. The lab’s work has advanced understanding of embryonic development mechanisms, particularly in endoderm-derived organs. Collaborative projects include modeling SARS-CoV-2 infection and developing anti-neoplastic therapies using organoid systems.
Recent publications highlight advancements in vascularized organoids, intestinal epithelial responses to pathogens, and molecular pathways regulating organogenesis. The lab adheres to principles of diversity and equity, fostering an inclusive environment for scientific inquiry.
