Jason Laurendeau is a Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Lethbridge. His academic work centers on settler colonialism, embodiment, gender, risk, and physical culture, with a focus on sport, recreation, and outdoor activities as sites of colonial violence and Indigenous resurgence. He employs critical methodologies such as ethnography, interviews, textual analysis, and autoethnography.
Education: B.Kin. (Distinction) in Kinesiology; M.A. and Ph.D. in Sociology.
His research interrogates how physical culture intersects with colonial histories, Indigenous sovereignty, and contemporary social justice efforts. Recent work examines systemic racism in Lethbridge, diversity initiatives in sport corporations, and the "wilderness ideal" in outdoor recreation.
Media Engagement: Laurendeau contributes to public discourse through opinion pieces in the Lethbridge Herald on topics like decolonization, harm reduction, and community investment. He actively mentors graduate students and collaborates on critical projects related to settler accountability.
