Jason Kelly Johnson is a tenured Full Professor in the Architecture Program at the California College of the Arts (CCA) in San Francisco. He is co-director of CCA's Digital Craft Lab and founding design partner of FUTUREFORMS, an experimental research and design practice. His work bridges architecture, art, robotics, and responsive building systems, with projects ranging from furniture and pavilions to large-scale urban installations like Lightweave, which received international acclaim.
Johnson earned his Bachelor of Science from the University of Virginia and Master of Architecture from Princeton University, where he was awarded the Suzanne Kolarik Underwood Thesis Prize. He has previously taught at the University of Michigan, Cornell University, University of Pennsylvania, and University of Virginia, and has led workshops globally, including at the Architectural Association.
His research focuses on responsive environments, interactive kinetic architectures, and self-organizing intelligent systems. He leads the research seminar “Robotic Ecologies” and has been a Research Associate at the Non-Linear Systems Organization (NSO) founded by Cecil Balmond. His work explores the integration of advanced fabrication, robotics, and data-driven design in public spaces.

Johnson has advised numerous students through design studios and research seminars at CCA and other institutions. He has served as a juror at top architecture schools including Harvard, Yale, Columbia, and IIT, and has consulted for the Institute for the Future in Palo Alto.
He co-directs the Digital Craft Lab at CCA, a research hub exploring digital fabrication and responsive systems. As founding partner of FUTUREFORMS, he leads an interdisciplinary team merging design, technology, and public art. He also contributes to academic leadership as past President of ACADIA and serves on the Dean's Advisory Board at the University of Virginia School of Architecture and the Green Benefits District in San Francisco.
