Karl Daubmann is Dean and Professor at the College of Architecture and Design at Lawrence Technological University, where he also serves as Interim Provost. He has a strong academic and professional background in architectural design, digital fabrication, and technology-driven innovation. Previously, he was Associate Dean at the University of Michigan and held visiting professorships at Roger Williams University, the University of Cincinnati, and the Boston Architectural College as the Sasaki Distinguished Visiting Professor.
- Bachelor of Architecture, Roger Williams University
- Master of Science in Architectural Studies, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Design Computing)
Daubmann's research and teaching focus on the integration of craft, materiality, and technology. He emphasizes robotic fabrication, digital design, and sustainable construction methods. His work blurs the boundaries between physical tools and digital systems, treating computers, robots, and traditional tools as extensions of the designer's body. His research studio, DAUB, explores design, architecture, urbanism, and building through experimental and interdisciplinary projects.
Daubmann is a registered architect and has led innovative practices in both academia and industry. He co-founded PLY Architecture, which received national and international recognition for research and built work, and served as Vice President of Design and Creative Director at Blu Homes, developing modern, green, prefab housing. His collaboration with Citizen Robotics aims to bring 3D-printed homes to Detroit, merging research with real-world impact.
His accolades include being a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome, winning the Founder’s Prize in 2015 for research on Baroque construction geometry, and receiving numerous awards for architectural innovation and research.

Daubmann has advised and led multidisciplinary teams across academia and industry, including leading creative teams at Blu Homes and co-founding PLY Architecture. While no formal students are listed, his leadership roles in academic programs and design studios suggest significant mentorship. He has secured recognition and funding through awards and institutional support, though specific grants are not detailed. His DAUB research studio and partnerships, such as with Citizen Robotics, reflect active research and collaboration in advanced construction technologies.
Daubmann leads the DAUB research studio, founded in 2012, which focuses on pushing the boundaries of design, technology, and fabrication. The studio’s work includes experimental projects like the Chicago Loop: Cloverleaf Building Shadow Pavilion and initiatives in 3D-printed housing. His integration of robotics and digital tools in architectural practice positions DAUB as a leader in next-generation design research.
