Jason Gilliland is a Professor and Director of the Urban Development Program at the University of Western Ontario's Department of Geography and Environment. He holds cross appointments with the School of Health Studies, Department of Paediatrics, and Department of Epidemiology & Biostatistics. His research integrates architecture, urban planning, and human geography, focusing on healthy communities, active transportation, children's environments, and food systems. He leads the Human Environments Analysis Lab, emphasizing GIS applications and participatory research methods.
His work spans urban planning, public health, and environmental justice, with notable contributions to household food waste reduction, adolescent health, and pandemic-related behavioral studies. Gilliland has supervised numerous graduate students, advising on topics like park accessibility, food environments, and climate change impacts. He serves as a leading voice in fostering child-friendly urban spaces and equitable food systems, with over 100 peer-reviewed publications and active involvement in community-based projects.
Recent research highlights include interventions in school food programs, vaping behavior analysis, and evaluating pandemic effects on youth health. His labs collaborate across disciplines to address spatial inequities and promote evidence-based policy.
