Jason De Santolo

Jason De Santolo is a Garrwa and Barunggam man and Professor of First Nations Land Justice at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), where he serves as Associate Dean (Indigenous Research) in the PVC Indigenous Office. He holds cross-appointments in the School of Design and Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building. His career spans over two decades, blending legal training with creative methodologies to advance Indigenous rights and environmental justice. He previously directed Indigenous Research in the UTS School of Business and led the Indigenous Research Synergies strategy at Jumbunna Institute for Indigenous Education and Research.

De Santolo’s research focuses on decolonizing methodologies, Indigenous storywork, and land justice. He co-edited *Decolonizing Research: Indigenous Storywork as Methodology* (2019) and directed the documentary *Warburdar Bununu/Water Shield* (2019), exploring water contamination in his homelands. His work emphasizes creative practices in design, education, and environmental advocacy, challenging colonial frameworks through collaborative, community-centered approaches.

He has secured grants totaling over $3M, including projects on Indigenous legal frameworks and climate justice. Awards include the Vice-Chancellor's Social Justice/Human Rights Award (2014). His leadership roles include membership in UTS’s Indigenous Research Committee and advisory roles at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School. He teaches courses in design studios and emergent practices, mentoring students in Indigenous methodologies.

De Santolo’s interdisciplinary work spans legal advocacy, documentary film, and design innovation, reflecting his commitment to Indigenous sovereignty and global environmental stewardship. He actively engages in public discourse through platforms like The Conversation, emphasizing Indigenous perspectives in fashion, design, and social justice.
