Craig Longman is a Professor of Practice at the Jumbunna Institute for Indigenous Education and Research at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), where he leads the Legal Strategies Hub. He has been with UTS since 2010 and established the first subject in Australia focused on Strategic/Movement Lawyering approaches in First Nations justice contexts. As both an academic and practicing barrister at Black Chambers in Sydney, Longman bridges theoretical research with practical legal advocacy.
His educational background includes an LLB Law/Arts (H) from Australian National University, Graduate Certificate in Law and Graduate Diploma in Writing from UTS. He has also completed the Company Directors Course and Legal Practice Management Course, and is a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales.
Longman's research focuses on Indigenous Justice, Climate Justice, and Ethics and Professionalism in the legal profession. His work emphasizes Strategic Lawyering methodologies that collaborate with First Nation communities to engage with the Australian legal system for just outcomes. He has developed innovative legal education programs that train Australian lawyers to work more effectively for First Nation communities.
His publications demonstrate a consistent focus on systemic discrimination, Indigenous rights, and legal system reform, particularly in relation to coronial settings, deaths in custody, and strategic litigation approaches. His work spans academic articles, government submissions, and practical legal resources that address contemporary challenges in Indigenous justice.

Longman has supervised research on topics including policing of Indigenous victims and changes to policing following re-investigation of murders in Bowraville. His current funded research includes 'Police Collecting of Ancestral Remains and Cultural Property, 1825-1930' (Australian Research Council, 2025-2029) and the 'EDO First Nations and Indigenous Peoples Program' (2021). He has served as Deputy Director of the Jumbunna Institute (2015-2018) and maintains active involvement in community legal services and advocacy.
