Jasmine Gideon is a Professor of Global Health and Development at Birkbeck’s School of Social Sciences, specializing in the gendered political economy of health in Latin America and issues of health migration. She holds a PhD and MSc in Development Studies from the University of Manchester and a BA in History from the University of Leeds. Prior to Birkbeck, she worked at the University of Manchester and the Nuffield Institute for Health at the University of Leeds, and consulted for organizations like the Pan American Health Organisation and UN Women.
Her research focuses on three pillars: gender and health systems in Latin America, globalization’s impact on health, and transnational migration and health-seeking strategies. Notable projects include co-leading the ESRC-funded EQUALITIES in Public-Private Partnerships (EQUIPPS) and a current Academy of Medical Sciences network examining health PPPs’ inequality impacts in Middle-Income Countries. She co-edits the Agenda book series on Women’s Work and produced a film, Crafting Residence: The Art of Chilean Political Prisoners, exploring exile narratives.
Prof. Gideon has supervised over 15 PhD students, focusing on topics such as abortion access, migration health, and gendered economic rights. She teaches modules on development theories, gender and development, and aid dynamics at Birkbeck. Her work bridges academic research with policy advocacy, emphasizing equitable health systems and gender justice.
