Jasmine Bylund is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Education and Special Education, University of Gothenburg. Her work focuses on multilingualism in educational contexts from sociolinguistic and educational sociological perspectives.
Her research interests include:
- Multilingualism in society and school from a sociolinguistic perspective
- Language use, language ideologies and education
- Educational sociological aspects of language and education
- Didactic dimensions of multilingualism in educational contexts
- Language, power and social justice
Dr. Bylund defended her thesis in December 2022 titled "Everyday Language Practices and the Interplay of Ideologies, Investment and Identities – Language Use and Dispositions among Young Adolescents in Multilingual Urban Settings." The study explored young people's language use outside of school and how patterns in daily language use and exposure interact with investment in language, language ideologies and the shaping of young people's identities. The research was conducted between 2019-2021 with young people in grades six and seven at schools located in multilingual and segregated areas in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö.
She is currently involved in two research projects: "Young Swedes and English," led by Liss Kerstin Sylvén and Pia Williams, and a project on the use of language tests in the recruitment of staff within various municipal services, conducted with Clara Palm at the Department of Swedish, Multilingualism, and Language Technology.
Her recent publications examine multilingualism in teacher education, language investment among adolescents, and out-of-school language practices. These works investigate how language use intersects with identity formation, educational practices, and social justice considerations in multilingual urban settings.
Dr. Bylund teaches language didactics within primary and secondary teacher education programs (F-3, 4-6 and 7-9/Gy), scientific theory and method within the Programme in Human Resource Management and Labour Relations, and serves as course coordinator for the Complementary Education for Foreign Teachers in the VAL/ULV Programme.
