Jas Morgan is an Assistant Professor in the School of Communication at Simon Fraser University. Their research focuses on Indigenous kinship, digital media, and cultural governance, particularly addressing issues of identity, appropriation, and community-based collaboration. They hold a PhD in Art History and Communications from McGill University (2021) and an MA in Art History from Concordia University. Morgan critiques colonial structures in cultural institutions and advocates for Indigenous-led digital media practices.
Research highlights include a book project examining Indigenous identity in Canadian galleries and museums, and the development of trans Indigenous digital media archives governed by Indigenous communities. Their work emphasizes collaboration over traditional academic 'study,' prioritizing community-driven methodologies. Morgan also leads initiatives like an Indigenous feminist policy think tank and explores trans Indigenous futurism through digital media.
Teaching philosophy centers on mutual learning with students and the importance of collective creation in Indigenous traditions. Outside academia, Morgan engages with popular culture analysis (e.g., Real Housewives) and maintains strong ties to their prairie roots through family and community.
