Jarlath Bolger is an Associate Professor of Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) and a Consultant Upper GI Surgeon at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin. He completed his medical training at RCSI, earning his MB, BCh, BAO in 2009, followed by a PhD from the same institution in 2014. After completing his National Surgical Training Scheme in 2021, he undertook a three-year post-CCT fellowship in Foregut Surgery at the University of Toronto and University Health Network.

Bolger's research focuses on utilizing patient-derived oesophagogastric cancer organoids to predict treatment response in patients undergoing neoadjuvant therapy, with additional interests in surgical quality outcomes and prehabilitation in cancer. His clinical expertise encompasses all elements of benign and malignant foregut surgery, including oesophageal and gastric disease, therapeutic endoscopy, and bariatric/metabolic surgery, with a specific focus on minimally invasive and robotic approaches. His recent publications demonstrate a strong emphasis on improving surgical outcomes through personalized surveillance, prehabilitation, and quality improvement initiatives.
His publications reveal consistent research themes across surgical oncology, with particular focus on esophageal cancer management, surgical quality metrics, and prehabilitation strategies. The publications show a trajectory toward personalized medicine approaches in surgical oncology, with increasing emphasis on predictive modeling and quality improvement metrics.
Bolger is actively involved in teaching RCSI medical students and training post-graduate surgical trainees, serving as module co-lead for the year 2 PCP module. His current research is supported by two major grants: 'Characterisation of the mutational profile of oesophageal adenocarcinoma metastasising to the brain' (RCSI, 2024-2026) and 'Investigating the transcriptomic profile in the development of invasive adenocarcinoma of the oesophagus' (Beaumont Hospital Cancer Research Trust, 2018-2021).
