David Chan is an Honorary Associate Professor at the Peninsula Medical School, part of the University of Plymouth's Faculty of Health. He holds medical qualifications including MB BCh (Hons.), MD, and FRCS (Royal College of Surgeons of England). His clinical expertise spans oesophagogastric surgery, bariatric surgery, and benign upper GI conditions. Dr. Chan has led major studies such as the MACAFI audit and contributed to international collaborations like the OCCAMS trial. He actively teaches, serving as a Postgraduate Instructor for surgical skills courses and an Undergraduate Tutor in clinical reasoning.
Research interests focus on oesophago-gastric cancer management, surgical outcomes, and minimally invasive techniques. He oversees two MD students investigating delayed gastric emptying and gastro-oesophageal junctional cancer. His work includes pioneering studies on pyloric dilatation and surgical approaches for acute cholecystitis.
Dr. Chan has been Chief Investigator for MACAFI and Principle Investigator in trials like HARP-2 and AROMA. He leads international studies such as SPACE-FLOT (Australia) and ACCEPT (Netherlands), addressing global challenges in oncology and surgical surveillance.
Publications span over 49 peer-reviewed articles, with key contributions to J Gastrointest Surg, Br J Surg, and Endoscopy. He advocates for surgical education innovation, evidenced by his global pandemic-era research on surgical training continuity.
