Janneke Ettema is an Assistant Professor at the University of Twente’s Faculty of Geo-information and Earth Observation (ITC), with a joint appointment in the Digital Society Institute. She holds a PhD in Meteorology from Utrecht University (2010) and a MSc in Soil, Water and Atmosphere from Wageningen University. Her research focuses on linking meteorological processes to hydro-meteorological hazards, emphasizing land-atmosphere interactions, climate change impacts, and flood/landslide modeling. She co-leads the CHANGES project, optimizing climate scenario development for Southeast Asia and analyzing hazard triggers.
Education:
- PhD in Meteorology, Utrecht University (2010)
- MSc in Soil, Water and Atmosphere, Wageningen University (2001)
Research Highlights: Her work spans Greenland ice sheet dynamics, Indonesian rainfall patterns, and urban flood modeling. Recent studies include tropical cyclone flood risk in Dominica and rainfall-driven landslide thresholds in Java. She integrates remote sensing (e.g., Sentinel-2, GPM-IMERG) with WRF and OpenLISEM models.
Teaching & Advising: Lectures on meteorological hazards, climate change, and atmospheric modeling. Supervises MSc students on topics like Indonesian rainfall extremes and drought risk. Advised Elias E. Chikalamo (2018).
Labs/Teams: Active in ITC’s Earth Systems Analysis and Digital Society Institute, collaborating globally on climate adaptation and disaster resilience.
