Janne Nijman is Professor of International Law at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva and Professor of History and Theory of International Law at the University of Amsterdam (on leave). She earned her PhD from Leiden University and serves as academic director of the T.M.C. Asser Institute in The Hague. Nijman chairs the ILA Study Group on Cities in International Law and holds advisory roles with the Dutch Advisory Council on International Affairs.
Her research examines the history and theory of international law, with special focus on cities as global actors, legal subjectivity, and human rights in urban contexts. Nijman's award-winning publications include the Research Handbook on International Law and Cities (2021) and Urban Politics of Human Rights (2023). Her work bridges legal history with contemporary global governance challenges, particularly regarding the role of non-state actors.
As Senior Fellow at the Research Group 'The International Rule of Law' (Berlin), Nijman explores intersections between legal history and democratic resilience. She serves on editorial boards of the London Review of International Law and Netherlands Yearbook of International Law. Nijman has held visiting positions at Cambridge University, NYU School of Law, and Johns Hopkins University.
