Professor Janis Kelly holds the Chair of Vocal Performance and serves as a Doctoral Supervisor at the Royal College of Music (RCM). A distinguished performer and educator, she studied at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and RCM, becoming an opera scholar and Ferrier finalist. Her career includes principal roles with major opera companies like the Royal Opera House and Welsh National Opera, specializing in roles such as Violetta, Marschallin, and Mrs. Lovett. She has collaborated with composers like Patrick Doyle and directed operas including Cosi Fan Tutte and Iolanthe for Grange Park Opera.
Her teaching emphasizes Bel Canto techniques from the Martienssen-Lohmann lineage, integrated with Feldenkreis, Alexander Technique, and performance psychology. Notable students include Sarah Jane Brandon and Soraya Mafi. Research interests include vocal pedagogy history, exemplified by her History of Vocal Teaching film series tracing her technique's lineage to Manuel Garcia.
