Léopold Simoneau (1916–2006) was a renowned Canadian tenor, vocal teacher, and opera administrator. He is celebrated as one of the finest Mozart tenors of his era, known for his precision and elegance in lyric repertoire. Born in St-Flavien, Quebec, he began his career in 1941 with the Variétés lyriques and later performed major Mozart roles, including Basilio in Le Nozze di Figaro (1943). He collaborated frequently with his wife, Pierrette Alarie, and recorded extensively under conductors like Herbert von Karajan.
Simoneau served as an advisor to Quebec’s Ministère des affaires culturelles, leading to the establishment of the Opéra du Québec (1971). He was honored with prestigious awards, including Officer and Companion of the Order of Canada, and Knight of the National Order of Québec. Alongside teaching at institutions like the Banff Centre and founding the Canada Opera Piccolo (1982), he authored L'Art du bel canto (1995), a seminal text on vocal technique.
