Janine Coates is a Reader in Equity and Inclusion in Physical Activity and Sport at Loughborough University, focusing on inclusive education, gender diversity, and outdoor learning. She previously held roles as a Research Fellow at the University of Nottingham and a Lecturer at Nottingham Trent University. Her teaching spans qualitative research methods in MSc Sport and Exercise Psychology and BSc Sport, Coaching, and Physical Education programs.
Janine’s research explores inclusive physical education for children with Special Educational Needs & Disabilities (SEND), gender inclusivity in sports, and the role of outdoor environments like Forest School in child development. She actively supervises doctoral students in these areas and has published extensively on topics such as mental health in elite sports, parental support in parasport, and trauma-informed sport interventions for marginalized groups.
Her work emphasizes participatory methodologies, ensuring young people’s voices shape research outcomes. Notable projects include evaluations of youth physical activity programs and frameworks for integrating Forest School into mainstream education.
