Dr Janina Ramirez is an Honorary Visiting Fellow at the University of York and Course Director for the Undergraduate Diploma and Certificate in History of Art at the University of Oxford. She holds a BA from the University of Oxford and an MA and PhD from the University of York, where her doctoral research focused on the symbolic life of birds in Anglo-Saxon England at the Centre for Medieval Studies. She combines academic roles with broadcasting and authorship, employing cross-disciplinary methods to study medieval culture.
Her research examines the interplay between visual and textual artifacts—including manuscripts, sculpture, and metalwork—alongside archaeological evidence. Key interests include:
- Anglo-Saxon art and its cultural significance
- Dynamic relationships between text and image in historical contexts
- The role of media in shaping historical narratives
- Viking-era cultural exchanges
- Medieval material culture
She has produced and presented acclaimed BBC documentaries such as Treasures of the Anglo-Saxons, The Viking Sagas, and The Private Lives of Medieval Kings, bridging academic scholarship and public engagement.
