Janice Dowell is a Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Syracuse University, affiliated with the Logic program. Her research focuses on philosophy of language, metaphysics, ethics, and deontic modals. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh (2002), an M.A. from the University of Michigan (1992), and a B.A. from Johns Hopkins University (1989).
Her recent work explores discourse relations, ritualized situations, and modal interpretation, as seen in contributions to the Oxford Handbook of Contemporary Philosophy of Language and presentations at institutions like Princeton University and the University of Southern California. Dowell has been recognized as a Laurance S. Rockefeller Visiting Faculty Fellow (2020–2021).
She actively serves on editorial boards (e.g., Philosophers’ Imprint), APA committees, and diversity initiatives like Syracuse University’s DEI Committee and MAP (Minorities and Philosophy). Her teaching spans moral theory, metaphysics, and topics in race and justice.
