Jani Varpa is a University Instructor at the Department of Economics and Management within the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry at the University of Helsinki. He is affiliated with the Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science and the Helsinki Institute of Urban and Regional Studies (Urbaria), where he conducts research through the Consumer Studies Research Group. His work bridges academic scholarship with practical applications in sustainability and consumer education.
Varpa's research focuses on sustainable consumption practices, particularly examining how young adults approach home-making, furniture acquisition, and sustainable living. His work explores the intersection of material culture, social psychology, and economic behavior, with special attention to intergenerational dynamics in consumer practices. He investigates how consumption rituals like theatre-going function as integrative social practices and how secondhand markets contribute to circular economy models.
His recent publications reveal a strong trend toward examining sustainable consumption behaviors in domestic contexts, with particular emphasis on furniture, home decoration, and intergenerational financial socialization. Varpa's research demonstrates how everyday consumption practices can be reconfigured toward greater ecological and financial sustainability through cultural and social innovations rather than simply technological solutions.

Varpa actively contributes to significant research projects including CONFIN-SKILLS, which examines how home and school environments facilitate young people's consumer and financial skills, and DECARBON-HOME, which develops resident-centered solutions for climate-wise living in suburban and rural areas. His peer review activities for journals like Metodologia and Kulutustutkimus.Nyt demonstrate his engagement with scholarly discourse in his field. Through the Helsinki Institute of Urban and Regional Studies, Varpa connects his research to urban sustainability policy and practice.
