Janez Plavec is a Professor of Structural Biology at the University of Ljubljana’s Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology and head of the Slovenian NMR Center. He obtained his PhD from Uppsala University (1995) and has held positions including a Fulbright fellowship at Georgia Tech (2002). His research focuses on NMR spectroscopy-based structural studies of biomolecules, nucleic acid structures, and ligand interactions. Plavec has authored over 320 papers, supervised 20 doctoral students, and organized 22 international conferences. He is a member of multiple scientific societies and received awards such as the Zois Prize (2017) and the Pregl Grand Prize (2024).
- Education:
- B.Sc. (1987) and M.Sc. (1990), Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology, University of Ljubljana
- Ph.D. (1995), Uppsala University, Sweden
- Research: Specializes in structural biology, NMR spectroscopy, nucleic acid dynamics, and G-quadruplex structures. Leads projects on prion protein characterization and EN-FIST Centre of Excellence.
- Leadership: Chairman of CERIC-ERIC Board and Slovenian Science Prize Council. Member of Academia Europaea and Slovenian Chemical Society.
His work bridges fundamental research and applied science, with contributions to drug discovery, structural genomics, and biophysical methods. The Slovenian NMR Center under his leadership is a key facility for biomolecular analysis in the region.
