Prof. Jerala Roman is a Full Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Ljubljana's Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology, and Head of the Department of Synthetic Biology and Immunology at the National Institute of Chemistry. He leads the Synthetic Biology research area at the Centre of Excellence EN-FIST. His career includes postdoctoral research at the University of Virginia (1994-1995) and a long tenure at the National Institute of Chemistry since 1996. He has over 150 peer-reviewed publications and 11 patents, focusing on synthetic biology, protein engineering, and immunology.
Education: BSc (1986) and PhD (1993) in Chemistry from the University of Ljubljana.
Research interests include designed bionanostructures, synthetic biology applications in medicine, antimicrobial peptides, and mechanisms of innate immunity. Notable achievements include inventing coiled-coil protein origami and elucidating TLR4/TLR3 activation pathways. He has coordinated major projects like the ERANET Bioorigami (2014-2017) and participated in EU Horizon 2020 initiatives.
Recognitions include EMBO membership (2017), Zois Award (2009), and multiple iGEM competition accolades as team leader. He has delivered over 70 invited lectures globally, collaborating with leading institutions like Harvard, Cambridge, and MPI Martinsried.
Grants and leadership: Coordinator of national and international research programs, including Horizon 2020 MSCA Tollerant (2015-2018). Active in COST actions (CM1304, CM1306, CA16122).
Labs/Teams: Directs the Department of Synthetic Biology and Immunology, integrating interdisciplinary research in biomolecular engineering and immunology.
