Dr. Janet Van Eersel is a Senior Research Fellow at Macquarie University's Dementia Research Centre within the Macquarie Medical School. She leads research into neurological mechanisms of dementia and epilepsy, focusing on developing innovative therapies like small molecules, gene therapy, and immunotherapies. Her work employs animal models, molecular biology, and histology techniques.
Education: PhD in Pathology (University of Sydney, 2010), BSc (Honours in Pharmacology, University of Sydney).
Research Interests: Alzheimer's disease, Frontotemporal Dementia, epilepsy pathophysiology, and therapeutic development. She explores tau protein mechanisms and neuronal hyperexcitability, translating findings into novel treatments.
Key Grants/Projects: Includes DARF-funded tau propagation studies (2024), gene therapy for epilepsy (2024), and peptide-based dementia therapies (2023).
Awards: 2015 International Society for Neurochemistry Travel Award.
