Janet R. Horne is an Associate Professor in the Department of French at the University of Virginia, holding a courtesy joint appointment in the Corcoran Department of History since 2002. She serves as Director of European Studies (2016-2018) and founded the UVA in Lyon exchange programs (2000-present).

Her research explores modern French cultural institutions in imperial contexts, focusing on the Musée social and Alliance Française. Recent work analyzes French as a global language through the Alliance Française's colonial and postcolonial roles.
Publications include A Social Laboratory for Modern France (Duke University Press, 2002) and articles in French Historical Studies, Contemporary French Civilization, and Le Mouvement social. Research themes span welfare state origins, colonial missions, and cultural diplomacy networks.
