Philippe Portier

Philippe Portier is Director of Studies at École Pratique des Hautes Études (EPHE), Paris-Sorbonne since 2007, where he holds the Chair in 'History and Sociology of Secularism' and serves on the Scientific Council. Concurrently, he is Professor at Sciences Po Paris, teaching political theory at the Master's level. Since 2008, he has directed the Societies, Religions, and Secularism Research Group. His previous positions include professorship at University of Rennes 1 where he led graduate programs and directed the Doctoral School of Law, Political Science, and Philosophy.

Portier maintains extensive academic affiliations including editorial board memberships for Archives en Sciences Sociales des Religions and Teoria e cultura, and directs two academic book series at Presses Universitaires de Rennes. He previously served on France's National Council of Universities (2002-2009) and was Visiting Professor at CIERL (2017-2018).

Research Focus: Portier's scholarship examines comparative secular regimes, sociological and philosophical dimensions of French secularism, religion-politics interactions, Catholic sociology, democratic theory, and contemporary political philosophy. His work analyzes how religious institutions adapt to and influence modern democratic frameworks.
