Dr. Janet Neary is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at Hunter College, School of Arts and Sciences (CUNY). Her research explores intersections of 19th- and 20th-century African American literature, visual culture, critical theory, and Black Western studies.
Key Research Trends: Her publications examine the epistemological and aesthetic dimensions of slave narratives, the role of visuality in Black autobiographical practices, and transnational frameworks for understanding race, caste, and empire. The forthcoming work Speculative Life extends this to analyze racialized spatial politics in the American West.
