Janet Lawson is an Assistant Professor at the University of Manitoba's Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management. Her research focuses on promoting participation of people with physical disabilities in sport and exercise, particularly through co-produced qualitative methods. She specializes in parasport classification systems and their impact on athlete experiences. Lawson holds a PhD (2024) and MSc (2020) in Kinesiology from Queen's University, alongside a Bachelor of Sport and Fitness Leadership from Camosun College (2017).
Her work critiques classification processes in parasports, highlighting how they may inadvertently harm athletes through invasive assessments and power imbalances. Recent scholarship emphasizes redesigning classification systems to prioritize athlete voices and reduce barriers to participation. Lawson advocates for improved classifier training and expanded communication channels between athletes and classifiers.
