Janet Ainsworth is the John D. Eshelman Professor of Law at Seattle University School of Law and a Research Professor at China University of Political Science and Law's Research Center for Legal Translation. She holds a B.A. from Brandeis University (1974), an M.A. from Yale (1977), and a J.D. from Harvard Law School (1980). Before joining Seattle University in 1988, she practiced law at the Seattle-King County Public Defender Association.
Her research focuses on the intersection of law, language, and culture, with over 50 articles and books, including Speaking of Language and Law (Oxford, 2015) and Consent and Coercion in the Law (Oxford, 2016). She has served on editorial boards, led professional associations like the International Association for Forensic Linguists, and authored amicus curiae briefs to U.S. Supreme Court.
Her work critiques police interrogation practices, linguistic ideologies in legal settings, and juvenile justice systems. Notable contributions include analyzing false confessions, 'English-only' workplace policies, and cross-cultural legal discourse. She received the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers' Outstanding Service Award for her advocacy.
