Jane Pulkingham is a Professor of Sociology at Simon Fraser University (SFU), currently serving as Senior Advisor (Academic Affairs) in the Office of the Provost and Vice President Academic. She previously held leadership roles including Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (2016–2021), Associate Dean (2013–2015), and Chair of the Department of Sociology & Anthropology (2003–2013). She earned her PhD in sociology and social policy from the University of Edinburgh.
Her research focuses on the institutional contexts of inequality, public policy, social welfare, and family law. She co-edits the International Journal of Social Research Methodology and collaborates with institutions like the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA). Key contributions include analyses of lone mothers’ welfare navigation, precarious work, and policy reforms in Canada.
Her work spans over 60 publications, including edited books on Canadian social policy and peer-reviewed articles in journals like Canadian Journal of Sociology and Critical Social Policy. She actively engages in policy advocacy through reports like Living on Welfare in BC (2008) and serves on advisory boards for influential research initiatives.
Pulkingham’s expertise bridges academic research, institutional leadership, and public policy impact, with a focus on advancing equity and social justice.
