Jane Pillow

Professor Jane Pillow is a clinical academic neonatologist at The University of Western Australia (UWA), holding dual roles as Professor in the School of Human Sciences and Senior Principal Research Fellow. She leads the Early Environment Theme at the Telethon Kids Institute and directs the UWA Preclinical Intensive Care Research Unit (PICRU). Her career spans over 30 years with prestigious fellowships including NHMRC Leadership and Viertel Senior Medical Research Fellowships.

Education: MBBS (University of Queensland), PhD (UWA) in High Frequency Ventilation, and a Bachelor of Medical Science. Academic positions include Associate Dean (Research) for UWA's Faculty of Science (2020) and Co-Director of an NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence (2013-2020). Active in grant reviews since 1999, she currently oversees over $35M in research funding.

Research focuses on neonatal respiratory physiology, mechanical ventilation optimization, and circadian rhythm restoration in preterm infants. Key projects include the CIRCA DIEM trial (circadian rhythm interventions) and development of fetal lactate sensors (DelivAssure). Her work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to reducing child mortality and improving health equity.

Awards include the 2023 School of Human Sciences Research Impact Award. She supervises PhD students and collaborates with global networks like the Australian & New Zealand Neonatal Network. Clinical trials include nebulized surfactant therapy and innate defense regulator peptides for sepsis prevention.
