Jane-Marie Law is an Associate Professor at Cornell University's College of Arts and Sciences, affiliated with the Department of Asian Studies and the Religious Studies Program. She holds a Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of Chicago and a B.A. in Religious Studies from the University of Colorado.
Her research focuses on the intersection of religious communities, ritual practices, and ecological sustainability. She has conducted extensive fieldwork in Japan, examining Buddhist monasticism, cultural memory, and ritual logic through human effigies. Her current work explores how intentional religious communities engage with sustainable practices and ecological healing, addressing questions of resource management, conservation ethics, and cross-community knowledge translation.
She has authored two books and taught courses such as Religion and Ecological Sustainability and advanced studies on Zen Buddhism. Her activism integrates scholarship and social responsibility, exemplified by co-directing the 2000 conference on religion and human rights. Professor Law also serves on the board of Namgyal Monastery Institute of Buddhist Studies.
