Or Porath is an Assistant Professor at Tel Aviv University, serving as Vice-President of the Society for the Study of Japanese Religions and associate editor for the journal Japanese Religions.
His research specializes in Buddhist Studies and East Asian religions, with concentrated expertise in Japanese religions and the Tendai school of Buddhism. He investigates historical intersections of gender, sexuality, and Buddhist monasticism, particularly how Esoteric Buddhist frameworks sanctified male-male sexual practices in medieval Japan. His current book project, The Dharma of Sex: Initiation, Deification, and Passion in Medieval Japanese Buddhism, analyzes the consecration of acolytes (Chigo Kanjō) within Tendai doctrinal systems, building on his co-edited volume Rituals of Initiation and Consecration in Premodern Japan (2022) which examined power dynamics in Japanese religious rituals.
