Jane Ellen Carland is a conjoint Associate Professor at St Vincent’s Clinical School, UNSW Sydney and Senior Hospital Scientist in the Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology at St Vincent's Hospital, Sydney. She holds leadership roles including Chair of the St Vincent's Hospital Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) and co-Director of the TDM Service for vancomycin. Her academic affiliations include UNSW Sydney and collaborations across clinical and research institutions in Sydney.
Education: She earned a BMedSci (HonsI) and PhD from the University of Sydney, with postdoctoral training at the University of Dundee, UK, and later research fellowships at UNSW and the University of Sydney.
Research focuses on clinical pharmacology, including structure-function studies of neurotransmitter receptors, optimizing immunosuppressant therapy in transplants, extending metformin use to complex populations (heart/renal failure), and ethical aspects of informed consent in clinical research. She also investigates prescribing practices and therapeutic drug monitoring processes.
Grants and Awards: Secured over $1M in grants including Digital Health CRC funding (2023), NSW Investing in Women Grant (2022), and NHMRC Project Grants. Recognitions include UNSW teaching and research awards, BPS/ASCEPT prizes, and early-career honors.
Teaching and Mentorship: Convenes pharmacology courses at UNSW, supervises Honours, Medicine, and PhD students, and chairs ethics committees. Engages in outreach via school programs and volunteer work with the Pink Elephants Support Network.
