Jane E. Cavanaugh, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Duquesne University's School of Pharmacy and an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Pittsburgh. She received her Ph.D. in Pharmacology from Pennsylvania State College of Medicine (1997) and a B.A. in Chemistry from Franklin & Marshall College (1992).
Her research focuses on the neurobiology and cancer biology of aging, specifically investigating intracellular signaling pathways (e.g., ERK5) that influence cell proliferation and survival in age-related pathologies. Key areas include:
- Neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer's, Parkinson's)
- Breast cancer mechanisms in aging
- Interventions using natural compounds (e.g., resveratrol)
- Motor deficit reversal strategies
Her publications (1993–2011) predominantly explore neuroscience and pharmacology, with recurring themes in ERK signaling, neuroprotection, dopaminergic systems, and aging models. Recent work emphasizes therapeutic interventions for neurodegeneration and cancer.
Awards & Honors:
- National Institute on Aging Career Award (K01)
- Travel Fellowship for Aging Research
- Graduate Commencement Speaker at Penn State
Grants & Funding: She directs multiple projects, including a Duquesne University-funded study on intranasal L-Dopa delivery for CNS disorders and an NIA-supported investigation into ERK5's role in dopaminergic neuron survival. Other grants target breast cancer pathways and age-related motor deficits.
Dr. Cavanaugh teaches courses in Human Physiology, Pathology, Pharmacology, and Toxicology for Duquesne's PharmD and graduate programs, and directs a laboratory focused on aging-related signaling pathways.
