Professor Jane Anderson is a Professor at Oxford Brookes University's School of Architecture, serving as Programme Lead for Undergraduate Architecture, Subject Coordinator for BA(Hons) Architecture, and Director of OB1 LIVE – a program commissioning undergraduate live projects with community-based clients. She co-founded both the Live Projects Network and Design for the Common Good Network.
Her educational credentials include a PhD, Bachelor of Architecture (Hons), and Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (PGCE LTHE). She is a RIBA Chartered and ARB Registered Architect with RIAI registration.
Anderson's research centers on architectural pedagogy through experiential learning models, specializing in live projects, design build initiatives, community design, and public interest design. Her work emphasizes co-design methodologies that bridge academic training with real-world community needs, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration between architecture students and local stakeholders across Oxfordshire and internationally.
Analysis of her publications reveals a consistent focus on developing taxonomies for live project education, examining the role of imagination in design processes, and creating flexible frameworks for community-engaged architectural practice. Her work demonstrates how design-build pedagogy cultivates social responsibility while addressing urban challenges through participatory approaches.
Her major recognitions include:
- National Teaching Fellowship Award (2014-17)
- Central Research Fund Phase 1 Award (2015)
- Santander Research Scholarship (2014-15)
- TQEF Research-Informed Teaching grant (2008-9)
- Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy
As an educator, Anderson supervises undergraduate dissertations and coordinates all three years of the architecture program. Her grant-funded initiatives, including the Live Projects Network and Design for the Common Good, have secured over £14,000 to advance community-based architectural education. Current research includes 'Mapping connections: Investigating experiential teaching in Community Design Education' (2023-2025).
She leads OB1 LIVE, the Live Projects Network, and Design for the Common Good Network while contributing to the Design, Research and Practice Research Group. Her initiatives connect students with over 60 community organizations through projects ranging from environmental play structures to museum installations, demonstrating architecture's role in social infrastructure development.
