Professor Jan-Willem Alffenaar is Chair of Clinical Pharmacy at the University of Sydney and affiliated with Westmead Hospital and the Sydney Infectious Diseases Institute (Sydney ID). He leads research in tuberculosis (TB) treatment optimization, antimicrobial pharmacokinetics, and therapeutic drug monitoring. His work spans clinical trials, translational research, and global health collaborations in TB-endemic regions like Indonesia, China, and Tanzania.
Research focuses include host-directed therapies, drug exposure thresholds, and implementation strategies for TDM in resource-limited settings. He has supervised 14 completed and 12 ongoing PhD students. Awards include the 2015 IATDMCT Victor Armstrong Young Investigator Award.
Alffenaar collaborates internationally with institutions such as Karolinska Institutet (Sweden) and the University of Groningen (Netherlands). His grants include studies on TB drug dosing, fungal pathogens, and MDR-TB management. He chairs committees on PK/PD and clinical research ethics, contributing to GCP frameworks in medical research.
He is a member of ECCMID, ASM, and IATDMCT. Current projects involve optimizing anticoagulant dosing in obesity and developing 3D-printed personalized pills for TB treatment. His labs focus on pharmacokinetic modeling and global health interventions.
