Jan Van den Stock is an Associate Professor in the Department of Neurosciences at KU Leuven's Faculty of Medicine, where he leads research in neuropsychiatry and cognitive neuroscience. He is a member of the LBI - KU Leuven Brain Institute and serves on multiple institutional councils including the Council of the Faculty of Medicine and the Council of the Department of Neurosciences.
His research focuses on social cognition across the lifespan and in neuropsychiatric disorders, with particular emphasis on neurodegenerative conditions like frontotemporal dementia and late-life depression. His work integrates multimodal neuroimaging techniques including fMRI, PET, and fNIRS with computational modeling approaches to investigate the neural basis of social cognitive processes.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong focus on the neural correlates of social cognition, with particular attention to how these processes break down in neurodegenerative disorders. His research increasingly incorporates computational approaches and AI modeling to understand complex social scene processing, while maintaining a strong clinical focus on diagnostic assessment tools for neurocognitive disorders.
Dr. Van den Stock serves as principal investigator for multiple major research projects including 'The neural basis of social cognition, a network-based investigation and clinical verification' (2025-2029), 'The Insular Basis of Thermoception and Social cognition' (2025-2028), and 'Social cognition in silico and in vivo' (2025-2028), among others spanning from 2022-2029.
He teaches advanced courses including 'Hot Topics in System and Cognitive Neurosciences' and 'Advances in the Neurobiology of Psychiatric Disorders,' contributing to graduate education in neuroscience and psychiatry at KU Leuven.
