Jan Urke is a Sessional Lecturer in Double Bass at the University of Alberta and a Contract Instructor at the Alberta College Conservatory of Music. He has held these roles since the mid-1980s. As a performer, he serves as Principal Double Bass of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra (ESO) since 1980. His career spans prestigious ensembles such as the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, National Ballet Orchestra, and Bolshoi Ballet Orchestra.
Urke holds a BMus from the University of Toronto, with further studies in orchestral performance at the Banff Centre for the Arts. His research and teaching focus on Ensemble Communication and Orchestral Excerpts, emphasizing collaborative performance techniques. He has appeared as a soloist with the ESO, Edmonton Chamber Orchestra, and Pro Coro Canada, and contributed as a Resource Artist at the Banff Centre.
