Jan Szmatloch is a Professor and Head of the Intaglio Techniques Studio at the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice, Poland. Born in Ruda Śląska (1950), he graduated from the Faculty of Graphic Art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków (1974). His artistic practice focuses on printmaking (etching) and drawing, with over 220 national and 85 international exhibitions since 1975. He has participated in prestigious biennials and triennials, earning awards such as the Merit Award in Fredrikstad and a Medal in Łódź. His work has been supported by grants including the Ministry of Culture and Art (1978) and Aldegrever Gesellschaft (1985).

Research & Exhibitions: Jan’s exhibitions span global venues, including Kraków, Ljubljana, Frechen, and Toronto. His art explores technical precision in etching and drawing, reflecting Silesian cultural identity. He has contributed to the preservation and innovation of printmaking techniques.

- Bronze Medal in ED-Awards 2014 (as part of collaborative projects)

Advising & Grants: As a professor, he mentors students in printmaking and design. Collaborative projects include the '100 Silesian Colours and Patterns' scholarship, promoting regional heritage through contemporary design. His work integrates traditional craftsmanship with modern digital techniques.
