Professor Jan Kujala is a full professor of brain development at the University of Jyväskylä, Department of Psychology, within the Faculty of Education and Psychology. He earned his Ph.D. from Helsinki University of Technology in 2008 and joined the University of Jyväskylä in 2019. His research focuses on neural mechanisms underlying human cognition, behavior, and development, leveraging advanced neuroimaging techniques like magnetoencephalography (MEG) and computational analysis.
His research interests include understanding how neural activity and connectivity form adaptive systems, particularly in healthy individuals across the lifespan and clinical populations. Key areas include oscillatory activity, cortico-cortical connectivity, and links between neural processes and behavior. He leads the Neural Processes and Connectivity group and is part of the Centre of Excellence for Learning Dynamics and Intervention Research InterLearn.
Recent work highlights studies on breathing’s neural modulation, abstract concept processing via MEG, and test-retest reliability of language-related brain connectivity. His 2024 and 2025 publications explore dog-human interaction physiology, empathy’s role in neurophysiological decoding, and GABAergic inhibition in visual memory. He also investigates sensorimotor beta oscillations’ heritability and the neural underpinnings of reading and executive functions in aging.
His research emphasizes methodological advancements in MEG and EEG, particularly in connectivity analysis and artifact removal. Collaborative projects include interdisciplinary studies on human-animal interactions, brain plasticity, and clinical applications like stroke and Parkinson’s disease.
