Professor Jan Krämer holds the Chair of Internet and Telecommunications Business at the University of Passau since 2014 and serves as Academic Co-Director at the Center on Regulation in Europe (CERRE), a Brussels-based think tank. Previously, he led the research group 'Telecommunication Markets' at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). His work bridges academic research and policy development in the rapidly evolving digital economy.
Professor Krämer's research focuses on the economic regulation of internet and telecommunications markets, digital ecosystems, and data-driven business models. He is particularly renowned for his influential work on net neutrality, examining how large internet platforms like Google, Facebook, and Amazon operate in largely unregulated spaces compared to traditional monopolies in sectors like telecommunications and energy. His research emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to develop balanced regulatory frameworks for the digital economy, arguing that 'an interdisciplinary forum for discussing and scrutinizing the future regulatory framework for the internet economy from many different angles' is essential.
Analysis of Professor Krämer's recent publications reveals a consistent trajectory examining digital platform regulation, market power dynamics, and data governance. His work spans economic, legal, and policy perspectives, with increasing attention to emerging challenges in digital advertising markets as evidenced by his 2025 study suggesting 'regulatory measures alone will not be enough.' The research often employs game theory models and interdisciplinary approaches, reflecting the complex nature of digital platform ecosystems.
Professor Krämer contributes significantly to academic and policy discussions through his leadership roles:
- Academic Co-Director at CERRE (Center on Regulation in Europe)
- Lead of the Junior Research Group 'Data Neutrality & Open Access: Coherent Economic Policies for the Digital Economy'
- Co-leader of the DFG Research Training Group 'Digital Platform Ecosystems' (DPE)
- Host of the #PassauDPE distinguished keynote series featuring international experts
He actively mentors doctoral students, including Janina Hofmann and Sally Boyani Mokaya from Kenya, and has established the #DPEForum as 'a platform for young talents.' His research group serves as a hub for interdisciplinary work on the economic aspects of digital platform regulation, collaborating with institutions like Tilburg University and the University of California, Davis. Professor Krämer also co-hosts the 'How-to-Wiwi' podcast with Professor Andreas König, discussing innovative approaches to doctoral education in digital platform ecosystems.
