Prof. Jan Kruse is a Professor of Visual Effects and Prorector for Research and Transfer at Mediadesign University of Applied Sciences. Previously, he spent over 15 years in the Visual Effects industry, working as VFX Supervisor at Weta Digital on major films like The Lord of the Rings and King Kong. He holds a PhD in Creative Technologies from Auckland University of Technology (AUT), where he also co-founded the VRLab and led research in immersive technologies.
- Current roles: Leading a Research Lab for Immersive Technologies in Germany and CEO of Irradiance Game Studios (Munich).
- Research focuses on the intersection of Visual Effects, Game Design, and Computer Science, including multi-agent systems, VR applications, and procedural content generation.
- Secured $1M+ in grants for research projects, including collaborations with Technical University of Munich (TUM).
His research interests emphasize designer-driven software frameworks, immersive technologies, and innovative pedagogical models for industry collaboration. He has supervised over 15 Master’s and Bachelor’s theses in areas like VR museum technologies, game level design, and medical visualization.
Key achievements include presenting at SIGGRAPH Asia, developing the Cryptomatte tool for visual effects workflows, and receiving the 2017 Vice-Chancellor Doctoral Study Award. His work bridges academic research with practical industry applications in gaming, VFX, and healthcare technology.
