Dr. Jan Helmdag is an Assistant Professor at the Swedish Institute for Social Research (SOFI), Stockholm University, specializing in social policy and political science. He serves as the managing director of the Social Policy Indicators (SPIN) database, enhancing its capacity to provide annual data on social rights, including unemployment, pensions, parental leave, and housing benefits. His work also involves synchronizing SPIN with the DEMSCORE research infrastructure.
He leads the FORTE-funded project (since 2024) on 'The dualisation of social rights in Sweden and beyond,' analyzing how social policy design affects income inequality through employment-related benefits. During his 2025 Trinity term visit at DSPI, he collaborates with Professor Kenneth Nelson to position DSPI as a SPIN research hub and presents findings on the Benefit Dualisation Index (BDI) in the Comparative Social Policy Research Group Seminar.
