Jan Gustafsson serves as a Senior Lecturer in Natural Materials Engineering at Åbo Akademi University's Faculty of Science and Engineering. His research focuses on developing sustainable biomaterials with particular emphasis on nanocellulose, lignin, and composite materials that contribute to multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals. His work bridges fundamental materials science with practical applications for environmental sustainability.
Dr. Gustafsson's research interests center on sustainable materials development, with specific expertise in:
- Nanocellulose processing and applications
- Lignin modification and utilization
- Biomass waste valorization (particularly sawmill waste)
- Green composite development
- Sustainable packaging solutions
- Photocatalytic materials from renewable resources
His publication record spans from 1999 to the present, with significant recent output in 2025. Analysis of his articles reveals a consistent focus on transforming natural polymers into advanced functional materials, with increasing emphasis on circular economy principles and industrial applications. His work demonstrates strong progression from fundamental material characterization to applied sustainable technologies.
Dr. Gustafsson actively secures research funding through competitive channels, currently leading or co-leading two major projects:
- EFP: Emission Free Pulping (2024-2026, Business Finland) where he serves as Co-Principal Investigator
- Kestävästi tiläsävä! (2023-2025, European Regional Development Fund) where he is Principal Researcher
His research group, the Laboratory of Natural Materials Technology, focuses on creating sustainable material solutions through innovative processing of renewable resources, with strong connections to both academic and industrial partners in the Nordic region and beyond.
