Anna Sundberg is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Wood and Paper Chemistry at Åbo Akademi University’s Faculty of Science and Engineering. Her research focuses on wood and paper chemistry, with expertise in nanocellulose, sustainable materials, and material science. She contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals through her work on eco-friendly materials and chemical processes. Her laboratory, the Laboratory of Natural Materials Technology, develops technologies for a sustainable future.
Research interests include nanocellulose applications, polymer compatibilization, fungal degradation of wood components, and improving paper properties through additives and processing techniques. Her work bridges fundamental chemistry with industrial applications, addressing challenges in pulp production, material strength, and environmental sustainability.
Recent publications highlight advancements in spectrometric analysis for pulp extractives, fungal degradation studies, and polymer-cellulose composites. Her interdisciplinary approach combines machine learning, microscopy, and chemical engineering to innovate in material characterization and process optimization. Sundberg actively supervises BSc, MSc, and PhD students in these areas, contributing to the next generation of researchers in sustainable materials science.
