Jan Fleckenstein serves as Teaching Professor and Director of the Law Library at Syracuse University College of Law since 2017, previously holding the position of Associate Director & Head of Library Information Systems. With continuous service at the institution since 1987, she has extensive experience across all library operational domains including circulation, interlibrary loan/document delivery, reference, technical services (acquisitions, cataloging, serials), academic computing, and administration.
Her academic credentials include:
- B.A., cum laude, Le Moyne College (1982)
- M.L.S., Syracuse University (1984)
- M.S., Syracuse University (1986)
- J.D., magna cum laude, Syracuse University College of Law (2011)
Her research focuses on optimizing law library infrastructure through strategic planning and design, with specialized expertise in curating business information resources that directly support legal education curricula. She actively investigates the integration of information technology into library ecosystems and evidence-based approaches to library renovation projects, presenting findings at major conferences including AALL, CALL/ACBD, ABA’s Bricks & Bytes, and ALLUNY.
Professional recognition includes:
- Katie M. Deveau Spirit of ALLUNY Award for service to the law library community (2008)
Fleckenstein has taught Legal Information courses at Syracuse University's School of Information Studies (iSchool) and provided expert consultation on library facilities projects. Her leadership extends to professional associations where she served as past president of both the Association of Law Libraries of Upstate New York (ALLUNY) and the Pi Lambda Sigma chapter of Beta Phi Mu at Syracuse University.
