Jan Cannizzo is a Teaching Associate Professor and Associate Chair for Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Stevens Institute of Technology. He holds appointments since 2014, progressing from Visiting Assistant Professor (2014-2015), Teaching Assistant Professor (2015-2022), to his current roles since 2022. His work bridges pure mathematics research and mathematics education innovation.
Research interests include group theory, dynamical systems (random subgroup structures, cellular automata), and education-focused areas like active learning in calculus, educational technology, and undergraduate-led outreach programs such as the Stevens Math Circle Initiative. He leads an NSF-IUSE grant studying the impact of this initiative and is part of the Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence in Mathematics Education.
Awards include the 2025 Employee Excellence Award and 2023 Distinguished Teacher-Mentor Award. He has secured grants including NSF-IUSE (2022), MAA Dolciani (2020 & 2018), and Sloan Foundation seed funding (2018).
