Prof. Jan-Berend Stuut is a Research Leader in the Ocean Systems department at the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ). He holds an honorary professorship in Aeolian Sedimentology at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. His research focuses on desert dust's role in climate, including its impact on ocean fertilization, atmospheric processes, and paleoclimate reconstructions. He leads projects like MedDust2025 and Dust2023, deploying sediment traps to study Saharan dust transport across the Atlantic.
Key research interests include dust-driven marine productivity, climate feedback mechanisms, and reconstructing past environmental conditions via sediment archives. He has secured grants, including an NWO Open Competition grant in 2020. His student, Dr. Michèlle van der Does (PhD 2018), won a 2024 Veni Grant for dust-climate research. Notable contributions include demonstrating Saharan dust's transoceanic transport and its dual roles as a climate insulator and nutrient source.
Publications highlight dust's effects on carbon sequestration, methane removal, and ocean-atmosphere interactions. Collaborations span institutions like MARUM, MARE Lisbon, and Utrecht University. His work is featured in media like Netflix's 'Connected' and the Australian press.
