Jan Bena is Associate Professor and Chair of the Finance Division at the University of British Columbia's Sauder School of Business, where he holds the Bank of Montreal Chair in International Finance. He serves as Academic Director of the Portfolio Management Foundation (PMF) program and advises UBC's Sauder Women in Finance Training (SWIFT) initiative. He earned dual PhDs in Finance (London School of Economics) and Economics (CERGE-EI).
His research explores:
- Innovation economics: Labor-technology tradeoffs, R&D asset pricing, and patent-driven firm dynamics
- Decentralized finance: Token-based governance models and platform ecosystems
- Global capital flows: Foreign ownership impacts and multinational spillover effects
- Corporate structure: Ownership pyramids, startup financing, and pay inequality drivers
Publication analysis reveals dominant themes in technological disruption (50% of recent work), multinational firm behavior (30%), and entrepreneurial finance (20%), with empirical methodologies leveraging patent datasets and international firm-level data.
